Jason Martin is an English artist whose creations oscillate between painting and sculpture. There is a freedom and disruptive beauty about in his work that brings to mind some of the qualities of artist such as Pollock and De Kooning. The intensely expressive gesture and his focus on process are some kind of homage to Abstract Impressionism.
Today, I selected his cast copper and nickel works. These eight pieces are part of his solo show Painting as Sculpture at the Lisson Gallery in Milan. Mousse Magazine writes, “This jewel-like series of eight panel reliefs hovers between dual registers: between painting and sculpture, between the singular and the serial, between movement and stasis and even between abstraction and figuration, as each viewer is mirrored in the smooth, unpainted sections of the supports.
Martin’s artwork has been exhibited in solo and group shows in a number of galleries and museums across the world, including The Fine Art Society in London, Palazzo Fortuny in Venice, Italy, Galerie Mario Sequeira in Braga, Portugal, L.A. Louver in Los Angeles, CA, Musée d´Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France, and the PAP Gallery in Tokyo, Japan.
