In our age of technology, animated films have turned to CGI and forsaken craft of utilizing paper, canvases, pencils, and paint brushes in animation. But fear not for BreakThru Productions has director Dorota Kobiela and filmmaker Hugh Welchman directing Loving Vincent, a new documentary about the life of Vincent van Gogh…completely painted by hand!!

With 12 oil paintings per-second animation, the film walks us through van Gogh’s troubled life as well as explores his mysterious death. Over 120 of his iconic paintings were included and brought into motion thanks to a trained team of painters. inspired by the style and hand of van Gogh. About 56,800 frames were painted for this 80-minute film. To make this documentary, the studio created their own unique technique: Painted Animation Work Stations (PAWS). Graphic designer Dluzewski shared with The Star that “The PAWS animation technique we use involves projecting scenes shot with actors so they can be painted by brush on a canvas. So the film becomes a canvas. The digital image is translated into a painting.”

The documentary’s plot was mostly comprised of 800 letters written by van Gogh himself. In fact, Kobiela shared with Voice of America that she was inspired to make this documentary after reading a letter after reading a letter van Gogh wrote to his brother in which he declared, “The truth is, we cannot speak other than by our paintings.”

Scroll below to watch the concept trailer and the first official trailer and get as excited as I am to see the completed version of this beautifully hand-crafted, magni-Vincent film sometime later this year!
