In 1989 the most horrifying thing happened to the classical beauty of Paris. It got a modern glass pyramid placed in the middle of its art temple: The Louvre. Parisians hated it. It was modern; it was an ancient Egyptian symbol of death; and its architect was not French enough. It has even been claimed that there are exactly 666 glass panels forming it, making it seem a “symbol of Satan.”

26 years later the pyramid has become a landmark of the city and a symbol of the world’s cultural heritage. Nonetheless JR street artist decided to give Parisians a glimpse of the past. JR is known for his large-scale photographic collages, which have covered walls and public spaces in cities all around the world. This time he covered Louvre’s glass pyramid with an old picture of the museum, taking us back to the times when the building stood by itself without any signs of modernism.

I bet Parisians will feel nostalgic about their world famous pyramid after a few days of JR’s installation. It’s in human nature to reject change. It’s a move against our conformity and known lifestyle, but change is not bad at all. It usually brings unexpected and exciting things. Sure it takes time to get used to it, but it’s the way society moves into the future and hopefully into a better one.

If you happen to be in Paris any day between May 25 and June 27 make sure to check out JR’s installation.
