NYC & Company is the official destination marketing organization for the five boroughs of New York City. They hold the huge responsibility of attracting tourists to all of NYC (not only Times Square). Also, not only they need to attract all kinds of audiences, but also reflect the true diversity of NYC.

The design team at NYC & Company has created a new branding project based on the logo designed by Wolff Ollins in 2007. This project consists of a new website, 2 new typefaces and a new set of icons.

In order to capture the real essence and diversity of the city, the team gave a new approach to the creation of the city’s icons: they let the experts of the city create their own symbols.

Based on the grid of the NYC logo, the team asked to different government agencies (such as The Department of Health and The Department of Parks & Recreation) for symbols related to their area of expertise. Thus making a more complete and sharp collection of icons. “They brought their own inside knowledge of the agencies into the icons, which is something no one on my team or an outside designer could ever bring to the table.”; Says Emily Lessard, Creative Director of NYC & Company.

Lessard’s team embraced the knowledge of every agency, and with that they were able to create a huge and diverse icon system. They valued the importance of teamwork and acknowledged the different expertise of every agency, creating as a result a new diverse and precise icon collection.
