Lerida, Spain. 1936. Republicans are losing the battle of Segre River against Franco’s troops, Cataluña is in peril and the republican troops are losing their motivation. Defeat is imminent. One of the commanders holds a piece of paper and reads a poem aloud. These words pierce the soldiers’ hearts as bullets of hope and courage. A 17-year-old boy has written these words. His name was Joan Brossa.

Joan Brossa was always a poet and it was that day at the Segre where he discovered the power of words. Nonetheless, his poetry evolved from words to images and objects. He started experimenting with poetry within the surrealist movement, introduced to him by Joan Miró. Then he took his poetry to theater and later to visual imagery. His poetry moved from the literary to the concrete, from verbal to visual images.

His visual poetry is constructed from letters of the alphabet, objects from daily life, irony and the absurdities of existence. He used visual lies and metaphors to communicate deeper truths and feelings. The cleverness and irony in his work seem pretty straightforward but it’s the way he uses images, words, and objects to express these simple truths that make his work unique and powerful.

I can’t help but see the relation of Joan Brossa’s visual poetry to the actual work of graphic designers. Joan Brossa’s work is pure art but if we as designers use this artistic concept and apply it to our daily work we could take our design work to a whole new level. If we think of color, words, images and objects as resources to create metaphors and visual lies in order to tell a bigger truth, we will find ourselves creating intriguing and unique works that will capture the eye and brain of our audience.
