Professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka of Ritsumeikan University, in Kyoto, specializes in visual and motion illusions. He defines said illusions as wrong appreciations of real objects, as lies that our eyes and brain tell us.

After his graduation, he got into animal psychology, but in 1991 he found himself fascinated by how our eyes and brain perceive “reality.” He began experimenting with perception and visual illusions, focusing on the relationship between shapes, brightness, colors, and other visual phenomena like Gestalt completion and perceptual transparency. Since then he has created hundreds of visual experiments that distort our perception of objects, shapes, and colors.

Even though Akiyoshi doesn’t think of his experiments as art or design, some of his illusions have been used for advertising campaigns and album covers such as Animal Collective’s “Merriweather Post Pavilion” cover art (below).

Akiyoshi’s work is completely scientific; nonetheless, it has opened design and art discussions around the world.

You can experience some of Akiyoshi’s experiments below, but be warned they may make you dizzy and confused.
