Winston Smith is a collage artist who was born May 27, 1952. After spending a couple of years in Italy, he came back to the U.S in the 70’s where he felt there was a need to express the gross conformism he saw inside American society at this time. To communicate his frustration, Winston began to cut out different images from magazines and newspaper which he then combined to create dynamic and striking collages with strong political undertones. It was his desire to discomfort the viewer and make them question the flaws in society.
