“I have always wanted my art to service my people — to reflect us, to relate to us, to stimulate us, to make us aware of our potential.”

Elizabeth Catlett was an American artist born on April 15, 1915 in Washington D.C. Her main focus as an artist was to showcase the experience of being an African-American female and the struggle for civil rights. Throughout the years, she would often depict black women as a maternal but also powerful figure, America’s Racism and later on the struggle of the rural Mexicans with their lands. Her principal artistic influences included pre-Columbian sculpture, Henry Moore‘s nudes, and Diego Rivera‘s political murals.

At first, Elizabeth was recognized for her printmaking pieces—which included linocut, woodcut, and etching—and her drawings. Later in her career, she shifted towards sculpture which would become her new technical focus while still carrying her original motifs. Exploring this technique helped her become the head of the sculpture department for the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plasticas in Xochimilco, Mexico.

Elizabeth remained an active artist until her death at the age of 96 in her studio home in Cuernavaca Mexico, April 2 2012. Below is a taste of her political voice.
