Today’s short animation “Velodrool” has picked up awards from festivals as far as Melbourne, Lisbon, and Ottawa and I can see why. The storyline is totally bizarre, but at the same time, one cannot stop watching. It combines a curious set of characters around cycling and smoking. I see a little bit of Mike Judge’s “Beavis and Butt-Head” in it—look for the fat kid and his snot. The story and animation were created by Sander Joon, a student at the Estonian Academy of Arts.
What intrigues me the most is the charm of the animation style. It achieves something very difficult in any piece of design: the art of being fresh and effortless at the same time. It makes me want to pick up a pencil and start drawing.
Synopsis:
An addicted biker runs out of cigarettes. He joins a race to get more, but has to get help from some peculiar people in the audience to stay in the competition.
