Koichi Sato’s work is deep and poetic. His designs combine the haiku tradition with profound and enigmatic images that give every piece several layers of understanding and meaning. Sato was born in Takasaki, Japan in 1944 and he graduated from Tokyo University of Art and Music in 1968. Two years later he opened his own studio where he explored his unique style through a wide range of projects.

Sato’s posters often speak to us in opposites, using contrasting elements such as tradition/modernity, organics/mechanics, light/dark. This use of contrast and the use of auras and glowing luminosities, give Sato’s work a metaphysical feel. It gives you the feeling that there’s more to it than meets the eye.

Sato’s poetic way of designing has made his work renowned around the world and it’s now part of the MoMA’s Collection.
