Production designer David Wasco and Set decorator Sandy Reynolds-Wasco are living proof that there’s actually a land where love and professional success are not adversaries. The husband and wife team have worked together in films such as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Inglorious Basterds, Kill Bill, The Royal Tenenbaums, and much more. Last year they brought David Chazelle’s dreamlike Los Angeles to life in the movie La La Land.

Chazelle wanted the film to have the feeling of contemporary LA but with a touch of magic. He wanted to allow his audience to dive deep into this magical world, which classic musicals are often conveyed. David Wasco and his wife Sandy Reynolds-Wasco were in charge of creating this city that was stuck between reality and fantasy. They built about a third of the movie’s sets. Every real life location was touched or controlled to express the film’s mood.

The film is harmoniously colorful and at the same time, filled with contrasts that take us through the story. It gives us a sense of the background of the characters and their desires. “We punched up the colors to enhance their energy and their hopes for the future. Their world was influenced more by the MGM musicals and the French movies,” states Wasco while talking about Mia’s, Emma Stone character, world. In contrast to Mia’s world we have Sebastian’s nostalgic apartment, which was inspired by jazz photography and black and white New Wave French films.

David and Sandy’s visual journey through La La Land is a spectacle in itself. The way they managed to express Chazelle’s story through colors, texture and architecture is breathtaking regardless the way you feel about musicals or love stories featuring Ryan Gosling. La La Land has given David Wasco his first Academy Award nomination, which he will surely share with his life long partner and co-worker Sandy Reynolds-Wasco.
