His name might not ring a bell but you are definitely familiar with his work.

Awol Erizku, an Ethiopian Born, South Bronx raised artist helped Beyoncé break the internet a few weeks back with a series of stunning photos. One of them, now liked on Instagram by over 10,000,000 people (the most of any photo in the history) was used to announce that queen B and Hov are expecting twins.

Taking cues from religious and cultural iconography, we see Beyoncé, draped in a veil, holding her belly, and staring straight into the camera. This seems to be a continuation of the work Erizku has produced in the past. Under his Bio on Artsy it reads:

“Distressed by the lack of representation for people of color in art history and museums and galleries, Awol Erizku aims to rectify this omission in his photographs, sculptures, and video installations, which are centered upon subjects of color. In his words, “There are not that many colored people in the galleries that I went to [growing up] or the museums that I went to. I was just like, when I become an artist I have to put my two cents in this world.”

I would say Erizku has put much more than two cents into this world. I would argue that this instant classic will be the image of 2017, and will be considered the 21st century Madonna, or Venus, or Frida. Check out her website for the full series entitled “I Have Three Hearts,” with accompanying text by poet Warsan Shire.
