Beer doesn’t make you fat! It makes you lean… against the tables, chairs, and basically anything. Last week was St. Patricks day, where we embrace celebrating with beers. But every day we are also constantly reminded to take it easy with alcoholic beverages. Throughout recent years, we’re constantly reminded of the bad effects of alcohol, primarily when driving. In fact, today, alcohol advertising is one of the most highly regulated forms of marketing.

Recently, the graphic design and publication company, Fuel, has released an anti-alcohol book designed in a peculiar way. This book displays a collection of unpublished soviet anti-alcohol posters; they look way better than the ones we have today or should I say, they’re more convincing. These vintage posters were produced between the years of the 1960s-80s or as some call it, the Gorbachev years. The collection warned against the social and personal effects of alcohol.

The Lead designers behind this publication titled, Alcohol, were Damon Murray and Stephen Sorrelli. The book has a hard constructivist style composition and the illustrations relied on pathos in order to convince the audience to quit drinking. Besides the great number of posters shared in this book, Alexi Plutser-Sarno’s two essays, Surviving Gorbachev’s Prohibition and The origins and significance of alcoholism in Russia are also included. There’s a lot to look at and read about in this interesting book. Besides being a “motivation” to quit drinking, it is also a great artistic reference for many designers based on the beautiful visuals.
