Kendrick Lamar’s new album cover for DAMN. has captured the attention of many hiphop fans and graphic design critics. The overall design is being criticized for its basic and “stark simplicity:” the red serif font, Times, and Kendrick Lamar beneath. Vlad Sepetov, the graphic designer behind the cover, defended his work saying:

Actually Vlad Sepetov collaborated with the Little Homies, art directing duo Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free, who has one of the most creative visions in hiphop today. The Little Homies were also responsible for the art direction of many of Kendrick Lamar’s previous music videos and album covers. Most recently K Dot’s critically acclaimed video for lush, heavy hitting track “DNA” with actor Don Cheadle, directed with Nabil, and “Humble,” directed with Dave Meyers had very positive reviews. A month hasn’t passed since the video for “Humble” released, and it has already reached to almost a 100 million views on Youtube.

Overall, despite the initial criticism of cover art of DAMN., the art direction has received the attention it wanted with a distinctive creative voice that surprises its fans. We have a lot to look forward to from Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free in the future!

Fans of music will also enjoy this.
