Crotian designer Zoran Lucic has designed a new series of posters for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (Mexico’s major professional wrestling federation) that redefine the visual iconography of Lucha Libre.

When he was approached with the project Zoran was a stranger to the Lucha Libre culture, he started investigating what graphic and nongraphic values defined the visual style of Lucha Libre. In his research he bumped into Jimmy Pantera’s book “Los Tigres Del Ring” and used it as his main reference.

After his research, Zoran decided to take a risk and avoid the visual clichés of Lucha Libre. He moved away from the vivid colors of the wrestlers’ masks and went for a black and white approach to the their personalities.

This series of posters certainly move away from the idea that we have about Lucha Libre, however they keep the necessary elements in order to remind us of the traditionally known aspects of Lucha Libre and its wrestlers.

Zoran works in his own studio in Serbia, where he has worked for clients such as The Financial Times, Fast Company, Royal Mail, Virgin Media, Young&Rubicam, Saatchi & Saatchi and Forbes.
