For centuries, Mexico has been a fertile ground for the arts. From fine art to film and from literature to architecture, the country keeps on producing unmatched talent. Today, I’d like to introduce one of the leading artists of the new generation of Mexican painters: Eugenio Ortiz Bretón.

Multitude, Solitude, and Truth is the name of his current exhibition. For the artist, truth is represented by drawings of his dog over hand-written notes.

“Most of these texts were written at night. They capture my daily experiences, that way I find patterns within my own emotions. My dog was my witness while I was writing, therefore I drew it in order to capture the fleeting moments.”

“To me, the vulture represents solitude. A bird that is not necessarily considered beautiful, the vulture reminds me that one can find beauty in ugliness.” Ortiz Breton says, “Solitude is seen as a negative feeling, painting vultures was a kind of therapeutic exercise.”

Last, multitude makes reference to the inhabitants of large cities.

“In New York, I experienced what is like to be in the middle of an ocean of people while you are totally ignored. To paint multitudes was to put down a multitude of loneliness, the peculiar feeling that you are nothing yet part of everything at once.”

I had the pleasure of meeting Eugenio a couple of years back when he lived in New York. In fact, I was one of the subjects of his exhibition titled “Painting Migrants” which was held in New York City in 2016.

It’s always a joy to see the career of an artist take off and grow. I have no doubt that Eugenio Ortiz Breton will be a name that many people will know in the near future.

For now, check out his work at Galeria Lazcarro in Puebla, Mexico now through the end of January 2018.
