Out of all the elements of design, color has to be one of my favorites. Although Alfalfa Studio doesn’t have one particular style, the bold use of color is one of the distinguishing features of our work. I’ve never been afraid to use it. That’s why I got really excited when I saw this beautiful color system book.

This colorful book is very intriguing as there is so little we know about it. For instance, the only thing we know about the author is his name, A. Boogert.  What makes it particularly special is that it was painted by hand in 1692! Which is a long way before Pantone published its first volume in 1963.  The 800-page book meticulously documents tints and shades of every color imaginable. Alongside the hand-painted colors, one can read careful notes beautifully hand-written in Dutch by the artist.

Titled “Traité des couleurs servant à la peinture à l’eau,” (Color Treatments for Watercolor Painting) the book was intended to be used as a reference guide. It’s ironic because to date, there is only one recorded copy of this inspiring gem. It was the Medieval Book Historian, Erik Kwakkel who first introduced it to larger audiences.

Hundreds of subtly varying colors were mixed by hand

Don’t you want to see it live? You probably can! The book is currently housed at Bibliothèque Méjanes in Aix-en-Provence. Next time you are in the South of France feast your eyes on this stunning artistic treasure.
