Stephen Hawking’s newest book has a cover design strikingly different from his other books. While his older books sometimes used extremely large font sizes, this one stays moderate. The main focus is instead the black hole– a common image on his books’ covers– but this time it is more aesthetically pleasing than scientifically accurate, with vibrant colors and good use of contrast.

The latest book asks “Will humanity survive? Should we colonize space? Does God exist?” It’s fitting that such a forward-thinking book about the future would keep a simple design. It is truly timeless and will be a recognizable image for all future species aware of black holes.

Perhaps the closest design to the new cover is the updated edition of “A Brief History of Time.” It too is kept simple, with gradients and smooth curves. However, the font is slightly different, and the covers come from different publishers. Perhaps, this newer cover drew inspiration from the older cover.

As it’s Stephen Hawking’s last published book, it is also his parting gift. “While there’s life, there is hope,” he wrote about his disease, ALS. Stephen Hawking will be remembered for generations to come through his groundbreaking books, and “Brief Answers to the Big Questions”, with its outstanding cover design, is just one more piece to a larger gift from Stephen Hawking.
