In times where social issues have been the highlight of the year, it’s important to bring awareness to the people and nothing better than to do it with art. Throughout the past years; to be specific since trump hit the presidency, more and more artist have gone out their way to express their sentiments through various art mediums. This past week SVA displayed a gallery exhibition protesting Trump, sexism, racism, and injustice.
The exhibition titled “Art as Witness” features work from graphic artists, illustrators, and cartoonist that explore controversial social issues in America. The topics range from social movements such as #MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter, #NeverAgain, to immigration and opioid crisis. A weeks before the midterm elections it was important to address these issues affecting the American society. This thought-provoking artwork challenges the viewer to a public debate and action.
Over 200 works by 53 renowned artists are featured in this exhibition including Milton Glasser, Gail Anderson, and Nancy Burson. Various mediums of art like illustration, political cartoons, animation, sculptures, and videos are included. Interestingly most of these political protest art pieces relate to events that have taken place since Trump was elected president. See below a few of the pieces displayed in case you missed out on the exhibition.
