Last month we lost one of the greatest movie title designers in the world. Pablo Ferro was born in Cuba in 1935 and moved to New York City at the age of 12. There he taught himself animation and illustration. In the mid-1950s he started freelancing and working with the likes of Disney’s animator Bill Tytla and Stan Lee. His fast-growing career in advertising and film got him to form Pablo Ferro Films in 1964.

From the spectacular title sequence for Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove to the iconic titles of The Addams Family, Ferro’s work has inspired audiences and designers alike for almost 50 years. His unique style took the world of movie titles design to another level. His skills to create fascinating and unique compositions with images, music, and type, even inspired the great Saul Bass.

He worked in creating iconic opening and trailers for films such as Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, Citizens Band, Philadelphia, Beetlejuice, The Addams Family, Men in Black, Good Will Hunting, among many others. Pablo’s titles and sequences have appeared in 12 Academy Award-winning films. His work has inspired designer and filmmakers alike, he’s been praised by designers such as Michael Beirut and Emily Oberman.

Pablo’s work crossed the line between film and graphic design. His passing means a great loss for the graphic design and the film industry alike, but his legacy will keep inspiring new talents to question the boundaries of their work.
