The aftermath of one Luis Buñuel’s most trepidatious period of his life gave fruit to the Spanish filmmaker’s pseudo-documentary, Las Hurdes (1933). Caught between the scandals brought by his second film created with fellow Surrealist Salvador Dali, L’Age d’Or, and the development of the Spanish Civil War, Buñuel’s friend, Ramon Acin, gave an opportunity Buñuel couldn’t refuse.

From Ramon Acin’s lottery winnings, Buñuel would be given two thousand pesetas to create a film. Unlike his previous surrealist films, he decided to focus on the destitute reality of the historical region of Spain bordering Portugal, Las Hurdes. This is where the latest animated film Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles, which was also inspired by a graphic novel, begins its story.

The Animation

Directed by Salvador Simó and script by Eligio R. Montero, the film has already nominated for two awards and won three. Composer Arturo Cardelús’ score pairs delightfully with vivid scenes inspired by surreal artworks, in which many are reminiscent of Dali’s artistic endeavors.

Buñuel’s Reality

Of many of the animated films released, many artists and admirers of the Surrealist movement will deeply appreciate the juxtaposition between the rich animation and live footage of Las Hurdes. While it may not be a kids’ movie, you may lose yourself in the irony and beauty of Simó’s view of Buñuel’s reality.
