Winners of the Copa Interamericana in 1998, DC united has evolved to become one of the most successful franchises in Major League Soccer. Debuting in 1996, the Champion of the first three MLS seasons has seen its crest change in three occasions-1996, 1998, and 2016.

Each element of the Badge reflects a strong tie to the club’s heritage and its unique connection with their fan base community. The Crest centralizes around a black bold eagle that represents the Federal Government in DC. Since 1996 this bird has been a consistent element of their crest, however, the recent update has the bald eagle facing right to symbolize forward-looking. The bars and stars inside the eagle were borrowed from the DC flag, which originated from Washington’s family crest. Having the eagle prominent, escaping out the shield, was intentionally done to reinforce the brand value of Freedom. Above the Eagle the wordmark DC UNITED was handcrafted by typographer Peter Horridge to reinforce the contemporary design with easier readability. The evolution of their logo is keen to see the club breakthrough another successful era and fly high as they once did in their earlier years.
