Legend has it that John Lennon once stated, Ey, ¡me gusta Racing! ¡Viva Racing! ¡Soy de Racing! In the midst of the 1967 intercontinental final between Racing Club de Avellaneda and Glasgow Celtic. Whether Lennon was an hincha or not, that year he was rooting for the Avellaneda side. Founded by a group of students from central national college, they became the first Argentinian team to win the 1913 league with a full native-born Argentina roster.

It is said the name and aesthetic derived from a french sports magazine that highlighted the name Racing Club de France who had recently been crowned champion in France. One of the founding partners, Germán Vidaillac, had taken notice of it and suggested the name, which would then be approved. In 1910 that racing club decided to adopt the Ciel et blanc stripes from the french side, however, the Argentinian team applied them vertically on their crest. Throughout history, the seven vertical stripes have always been a consistent element of the crest. Since 1920 the aesthetic of the crest has remained the same. In 1950, the racing crest was adjusted to have an identical width and height proportion of their new stadium.
