Graphic designer and artist Vicente Rojo was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1932 and emigrated to Mexico City at age 17. In 1949, the year of his arrival, he never imagined that he would be one of the legends of Mexican graphic design, particularly since he didn’t even know that graphic design even existed as a profession. He has said that his initial interest in design and image-making came from his love of cinema — he used to make movie poster for his own amusement. He would put together images and letters without knowing it was graphic design.

He began his career as a typesetter under Miguel Prieto for publications produced by the National Institute of Fine Arts. He learned design from his mentor Miguel Prieto and from the collection of French magazines owned by Prieto. When Prieto left, he was put in charge at age 22 and without much training, except for the short work experience under his mentor. He believed that the most important thing to be a successful graphic designer is to avoid boredom. Therefore, it’s important to have fun producing work that is both, aesthetically pleasing, and pushes the boundaries of established norms.

Rojo’s graphic design work covers a big gamut from editorial to posters to logo design to books. When the computer entered the world of graphic design, Rojo decides to follow his other analog passion: fine arts. After all, he studied fine arts at La Esmeralda, the renown fine arts college whose main leaders were none others than Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Close to 90 years old, he continues creating in the realms of painting and sculpture.
