Netflix recently released the animated movie Over the Moon, directed by Glen Keane and produced by Pearl Studio. The film follows Fei Fei, a young girl who is determined to prove that the legend of the moon goddess Chang’e is real. Over the Moon explores how different people process grief and how families grow closer together through adversity, all through a child’s imaginative lens.

When I first watched the movie, I thought it was Disney or Pixar because of the familiar art style and aesthetics, as well as the numerous musical numbers. However, I found to my surprise that it was actually created by Pearl Studio, who have previously worked on the movie Abominable. Either way, I was extremely impressed by the stunning visuals of Over the Moon, and I loved the colors and aesthetics that they used.

A magical vibe permeates throughout the entire movie, when Fei Fei is on earth and especially when she travels to the moon. Over the Moon manages to balance more solemn color schemes like dark reds and blacks with its bright pastel pinks and yellows. The shimmering golds don’t feel out of place, and it really feels like something straight from a kid’s imagination in all the best ways.

Overall, while mediocrely-received for its story and themes, Over the Moon’s art and visuals more than make up for it in my book. Fei Fei believed in the legend of Chang’e with all her heart, and I’m inclined to believe in Chang’e, too.
