The First Champions of the American continent, the first South American champion of the world, Penarol is considered the best South American Club of the XX Century by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS). The club was founded in 1891 at Central Uruguay Railway Ltd. Company” as a cricket club. With over 118 members Penarol was initially named Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club and it wasn’t until 1892 that they established themselves as a football club after it was suggested by the engineer John Woosey.

In 1914 the club adopted the name Club Atletico Peñarol. The crest was designed by the architect Constante Facello who embraced the black and gold colors used by the cricket team. The colors derived from the winning Locomotive Rocket and were the representative colors of the railroad guild in general. The Peñarol shield consists of 9 stripes (5 black and 4 gold.) On top of the vertical lines were 11 stars the symbolizes the 11 players that step a foot on the football pitch. Throughout the more than 100 years of Peñarol history, the shield has changed numerous times but the stripes and stars continue to be a consistent element.
