As I was doing research on classic illustrated children books, I run into this one-of-a-kind publication. Six Fairy Tales from Brothers Grimm illustrated by British artist David Hockney in 1969 and originally published in 1970 in London. Considered as one of the most influential British artists of the 20th Century, David Hockney has worked on every artistic medium. A painter, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer and photographer, many agree that etching is perhaps Hockney’s greatest medium — And this gem of a book proves it.

The 49 etchings bring to life six classic folk tales collected by the Grimm Brothers during the 19th century. Most of them well-known, the publication includes, The Little Sea Hare, Fundevogel, Rapunzel, The Boy Who Left Home to Learn Fear, Old Rinkrank, and Rumpelstilzchen.

Culture Trip has selected it as one of the 12 most beautifully illustrated children’s books right up there with The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. What sets Hockney’s book apart is the charm and mystery of each illustration. Hockney re-imagines these six strange and supernatural stories for a modern audience. Part Monty Python, part Edward Gorey the artwork invites you to wonder in the page and to get lost in the exquisite balance of lines and textures complemented with masterful use of negative space. Hockney also proves that sometimes color is not needed to set free our imagination.

The book was re-issued in 2012 and it’s available for sale in Amazon and other places.
