A few days ago F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece The Great Gatsby entered the public domain. And to celebrate its 95 year anniversary we take a look at its very famous cover art.

The cover consists of two sad female eyes and bright red lips adrift in the deep blue of a night sky, above a glowing skyline. The very famous artwork was created by Spanish artist Francis Cugat and it is named Celestial Eyes. Gatsby was the only cover design that Cugat designed. It is believed that the mysterious eyes in the cover are the famous eyes that appear in the billboard for oculist Dr. T.J. Eckleburg that watches over one of the climactic moments of Fitzgerald’s work. However, there is no proof that this is what the artists had in mind.

Other theories claim that the irises of the eyes with nude women in them represent Jay Gatsby’s views about and future with Daisy Buchanan. They are also said to represent the wealthy since the book strips away their outer shell and shows their true nature.

Whichever the real meaning behind Celestial Eyes is, we will probably never know it for sure. Perhaps it’s better that the mystery is kept since Cugat’s eyes will always represent Fitzgerald’s work and add a mysterious aura around The Great Gatsby.
