The roots behind FC Barcelona are traced down to one of the most successful clubs in Switzerland, FC Basel. Simply known as RotBlau (Red and Blue), FC Basel emerges in football all due to an advertisement placed in the Basler national newspaper. Emphasizing the football community, the brothers’ Max and Roland Geldner requested that a football team be formed. Following the request, on 15 November 1893, eleven men answered the ad and met inside the Schuhmachern-Zunft restaurant in Basel to form Fussball Club Basel.

Many of the founding members were members of the Basler Ruder-Club and that led them to adopt the blue and red colors from the first day. These blue and red colors contributed to FC Basel’s first logo in 1983 which has remained intact for eighty-seven years. The first crest documented consisted of a French old shield divided with the iconic red and blue color. The color also references the club’s motto, Rot isch unseri Liebi, Blau die ewigi Treui, Basel unseri Stadt (‘Red is our love, blue our eternal loyalty, and Basel our Town’). Inside the shield is the stylized monogram made up of FCB with a football placed beside it on the left. Throughout the years the logo has remained practically the same with the only difference being a slight change in the shield and having the football midway out the left side of the crest. An important aspect of FC Basel’s identity is that the crest should always be placed in the center of the jersey as opposed to on the traditional left-hand side.

The colors of FC Basel are said to have inspired the te identity of FC Barcelona due to the connection with the Catalan-based team founder, Joan Gamper. Gamper was a long-time captain of FC Basel and reflected this on the identity of Barcelona which also shares similar acronyms.
