A long due monograph on the work of graphic design icon Rudolph de Harak has finally arrived. Published by Volume and authored and designed by Richard Poulin, Rational Simplicity, Rudolph de Harak, is an exquisite book every way you look at it: design, content, and production. A must-have for graphic designers and modernism lovers alike.
The 408-page book is organized chronologically into six chapters that cover the life and career of the acclaimed designer from 1924 through 2002. Each chapter presents a period in his career including influences and collaborations. Rational Simplicity beautifully presents his groundbreaking work with illustrations and photography, yet it goes beyond that by giving us additional information that places the work in context. For instance, each chapter is supported by side bars on various designers, artists, architects, art movements, and typefaces that have had a direct and major influence on the Harak’s life and career. Rudolph de Harak is an AIGA Medalist among many other recognition.
“Rudy de Harak is a solid link between American and Swiss modernism. He was an exemplar of minimalist form with a conceptual content. A book on his life and work is sorely needed and long overdue.” —Steven Heller
