Nancy Margolis Gallery is currently showing Staying In, a show of nine painting by artist Sarah Lubin. The show will be displayed in the gallery’s online Viewing Room from March 2 through April 16th, 2021. What is striking about this show, besides the artist’s mastery, is the uncanny way she captures, the feelings we all are going through as we cope with the current pandemic. It’s like visual poetry. Her cast of characters, rendered in a sculpture-like way, are quietly arranged within interior settings as if in a stage. The environments where the artist presents lithe woman with elongated limbs are indoors yet surreal and ambiguous. In a dream-like state, the character’s eyes are fixated in the distance appearing to be looking beyond the paintings themselves as if longing to be freed from the weight of quarantining. Although most of them are presented in pairs or groups, each characters looks alone, suspended in a stage.
“My paintings develop as a culmination of memory, reference, and experience, evoking moments that are familiar yet strange.”
— Sara Lubin
