When you think about The Lord Of The Rings movies you probably think of Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy adaptation, and you are right to do so since Peter Jackson’s trilogy is considered some of the best movies ever made. However, there is another lesser-known film adaptation of The Lord Of The Rings.

In 1978 an animated adaptation of Tolkien’s trilogy was released. It was directed by Ralph Bashki. The adaptation cover the events from The Fellowship of The Rings and some events of The Two Towers. Bakshi encountered Tolkien’s writing early in his career. He had made several attempts to produce The Lord of the Rings as an animated film before producer Saul Zaentz and distributor United Artists provided funding. The film was a financial success but it received mixed reviews and disappointed a lot of fans for not covering the whole Tolkien trilogy.

Bakshi’s The Lord Of The Rings had an influence on Peter Jackson’s later trilogy and it’s very interesting to see the differences and similarities in both directors visions.
