If you haven’t had the chance to visit the Musée du Louvre in person, I have good news. The entire collection of the world’s most visited museum is now online. For free! You can experience it by smartphone, tablet or desktop.

The new Collections Database consists of more than 480,000 artworks available online for the first time. “The Louvre is dusting off its treasures, even the least-known,” said Jean-Luc Martinez, President-Director of the Musée du Louvre, in a statement on Friday. Every image is accompanied with scientific data: “title, artist, inventory number, dimensions, materials and techniques, date and place of production, object history, current location and bibliography. … These documentary entries, drawn up by museum curators and researchers, come from two museum collection databases, and are updated on a daily basis.”

The digital experience mimics the physical one. The museum’s eight departments are accessible in full — from Renaissance sculptures to the Dutch Baroque Period to Egyptian art. Imagine how incredible it is that you can see the Mona Lisa without flying to Paris. And what’s even better? You don’t have to fight the crowds of tourists to see it up close.
