Considered one of the best filmmakers in history Andrei Tarkovsky changed cinema forever with his visual poetry. Once you watch Tarkovsky’s films you start seeing him everywhere in modern cinema. He has inspired generations of filmmakers with his stunning photography that is more than a beautiful shot it is visual poetry.

In 1962 he released Ivan’s Childhood based on Vladimir Bogomolov’s 1957 short story Ivan. Ivan’s Childhood tells the story of orphaned boy Ivan, whose parents were killed by the invading German forces, and his experiences during World War II. The film is a beautiful coming of age story where Tarkovsky creates a visually stunning analysis of the loss of innocence and childhood in times of war. Viewed through the lens of 3 different characters of different ages, Tarkovsky analyzes the different ways the loss of childhood has different effects throughout the different ages of a person.

Ivan’s Childhood is a beautiful masterpiece that has iconic scenes and shots that every film lover should watch. Luckily Ivan’s Childhood is free to watch on youtube on the link below:
