Cat lovers in Japan are loving this new billboard that showcases a giant calico cat for 18 hours a day. Installed right outside the Shinkuku metro station, the screen projects a 4K quality LED that spans over three floors. The cat wakes up, meows, takes naps, yawns, licks his paws and does what real cats do like doing whatever it pleases. “Shinjuku east exit cat” as it’s been affectionately called by its fans goes to sleep at 1 am by resting his head on its white paws.

Even though the digital billboard is located in a prime advertising real estate, “Shinjuku east exit cat” is not advertising anything like a brand or product. The idea is the brainchild of two companies, one of the from Japanese conglomerate Unika. They said that one of the big reasons to do this is to bring some moments of bright and happiness as the world has become very dark due to coronavirus.

“Shinjuku east exit cat” only appears for a few brief instances per hour in between a stream of advertisements and music videos but that doesn’t stop people from hanging around waiting to get a glimpse of the feline. Not in Tokyo? No worries, there is a livestream for those not in the Shinjuku area — just be warned that the video stream doesn’t quite do justice to the live experience.

To avoid being a repetitive show, the cat’s behavior is being modified from time to time.
