As we all know, Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is one of the most popular living artists in the world. Her immersive installations have drawn millions whether to experience rooms of infinite mirrors or participating by sticking colorful dots on white rooms decorated in white furniture. I’ve seen her work in museums, galleries, and site-specific installations and have always want more.

If you have not experienced her work in person, the New York Botanical Gardens presents, through October 31, Kusama: Cosmic Nature. The show reveals Kusama’s lifelong fascination with the natural world. A love that started as a young girl as she spent long periods of time in the greenhouses and fields of her family’s seed nursery.

Her artistic concepts of obliteration, infinity, and eternity are inspired by her intimate engagement with colors, patterns, and life cycles of plants and flowers.

Two monumental new sculptures make their debut in the magnificent NYBG’s 250-acre landmark landscape: Dancing Pumpkin (2020) and I Want to Fly the Universe (2020). Kusama: Cosmic Nature offers a rare chance to experience the artist’s work in a beautiful open space with a little elbow room.
