Do you remember De Chirico’s work? His surrealist pieces are based on the eeriness of empty human spaces. The vast space in his dreamlike paintings gives the spectator a sense of isolation. There is something weird and wrong about the world De Chirico depicts: There are almost zero people in it. There might be one or two characters in some of his paintings but he usually paints really big spaces with the absence of humans.

Where did all the people go in De Chirico’s painting? Did they disappear? Maybe they died? Or maybe they are in a lockdown. Youtuber Nerdwriter1 has created this interesting piece inspired by his reaction to seeing the world under lockdown during 2020. He compares the feeling of the empty streets to some of De Chirico’s paintings and highlights the surrealist feeling that 2020 left in all of us.
