With Lunar New Year coming up, Riot, the creators of League of Legends, are releasing a new skin line to celebrate! Skins are cosmetics with different themes that you can purchase to alter the appearance of the character, each skin having unique illustrations attached to them. The new skins being released are titled “Firecracker” skins, one said illustration shown above. The Chinese zodiac for the year 2022 is a tiger, which is why there is said animal in the background, along with another character who’s appearance changed to look like a tiger as well. They’re shown eating “bao”, which are buns stuffed with different fillings, most commonly meat and vegetables. These are very common treats in China, making them the perfect addition to these illustrations to give a little more insight on Chinese culture.

The illustration for the character above highlights the colors in Lunar New Year really well, those colors being red and gold. In Chinese culture, red symbolizes good fortune and joy, while gold symbolizes wealth and prosperity, which are colors used in Lunar New Year to wish said things in the coming future. These colors are especially prominent in the red envelopes filled with money that are gifted during the holiday, many having gold designs printed on them. He is also seen holding up the large, multi-person dragon “costume” paraded around during the celebration, which I’m sure is one of the most well known traditions of Lunar New Year, and red paper lanterns are hung in the background, which is also another well known tradition of the holiday. It’s wonderful to see Chinese culture appear in very mainstream things such as games, especially during the Lunar New Year holiday!
