For the past few years, the Internet of Things has been trending at an alarming rate. People want to apply IoT to everything from cars to baby monitors to nuclear power plants to children’s dolls. While it’s important to progress forward as a society, we are getting ahead of ourselves and moving faster than we can properly secure the technology. Additionally, the uncharted territory of IoT is unlike any technology we’ve ever used.

Booz Allen Hamilton created the Field Guide to IoT Security to help organizations holistically understand what IoT security actually entails and why it’s important. The in depth field guide outlines the vulnerabilities organizations encounter, how to conquer IoT security, and real-world examples.

This publication shows how Booz Allen Hamilton is at the forefront of grasping IoT security. As a tool, employers use this to navigate different conversations with their current and potential clients.

Approach

We created a publication that is both visually stimulating and authoritative. The main design challenge was integrating the human element with heavy topics such as How Attackers Could Exploit Your Devices and Data. We avoided a sterile publication by using whimsical hand-drawn illustrations to contrast some of the dense topics throughout the field guide. Each abstract illustration including the artwork was inspired by the content of the publication. Also, we used a color palette is both playful, cohesive, and adheres to Booz Allen’s brand guidelines. All the design elements together encourage the readers to smoothly navigate the chapters.

With careful consideration for the sizing and binding, we went with a smaller size and perfect binding to maximum accessibility. The intimate-sized field guide is convenient to carry and easily lays flat when opened. Also, the large margins allow clients and employees the opportunity to take notes during discussions. Furthermore, the key takeaways, comprehensive diagrams, and chapter indicators help make the content friendly and digestible.

Outcome

The size of the book, thoughtful color palette, and complementary illustrations elevates the critical content to be front and center. The IoT Field Guide has became a critical tool to aid Booz Allen Hamilton’s employees successfully communicate with their clients the various abstract topics contained in IoT security.
